Seminar: Counting age backwards from death: some interesting results

Abstract: Age can be counted ‘forwards’ from birth or ‘backwards’ from death. These two methods reveal rather different patterns of ‘ageing’ as measured by risk of different morbidities or other indicators of dependency.

Some initial results suggest that most morbidity is better seen as a function of time to death than time from birth. Were these result to replicate in other populations, it would suggest that lengthening lifespans and associated ‘population ageing’ may have fewer implications for health and social care systems than commonly assumed.
